Thanking him for an interesting letter. "I never expected to survive the Morning Chronicle." The Cornhill split "augurs no good to either Thackeray of the Magazine. The April no. turns my stomach--It should be called Guys & St. Thomas's Magazine--Plates from Guys--if they reach one half of their 100,000 I shall be surprised." He suffers "from pain & discomfort & the Doctors do more harm than good. John is better but not much delighted with the wet weather in Cheshire."
